When I approached this piece, my first thought was "how fun!" Which became "how dismal!" after realizing the true nature of the construction. I was pleased that the artist recognized the joyful, playground aspect of the work alongside its morbidity.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8415832267636845668.post-6298938748421631742011-09-08T09:31:36.031-07:002011-09-08T09:31:36.031-07:00Thank you for these.

Sometimes I think artist try to hard to be creative - instead of just plain observant. Darwin has proven that the "greatest show on earth" is was not created by a single designer -but a complex system of mutations and time. Maybe the creative part is connecting the dots so that other people see the shape - but the dots are already out there...Lee Waltonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10691537277089838959noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8415832267636845668.post-36064439474398297272011-02-27T09:30:26.332-08:002011-02-27T09:30:26.332-08:00Bruguera is a great artist. As I hinted at, this post was actually a bit garbled in delivery, which is unusual for Coates, who generally makes every attempt to be clear in his thinking and writing. I haven't read it, but I think his memoir, The Beautiful Struggle, might also be very good.Chris Cassidyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16125249058748408744noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8415832267636845668.post-91834439641529768752011-02-19T15:30:31.385-08:002011-02-19T15:30:31.385-08:00Ta Nehisi Coates Great!!!! The idea that one could trade one right for another connects to Benjamin's Author as Producer, which removes artistic production from isolated spheres and into an interconnected social matrix. This idea comes from early Karl Marx, which criticizes the Enlightenment idea of individual rights as something isolating and reactionary. Rights aren't just about individual liberty but can be about expansive social progress.

Taking this conversation to art is interesting since art can be so extremely personal and interior and the trade-offs or risks aren't necessarily what we think they're going to be. But to quote that great Marxist Steve Guttenberg from my favorite episode of "Party Down" -- "No risk means no reward."Harry Swartz-Turflehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10600892030662706839noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8415832267636845668.post-51628838326763224652011-02-17T14:02:34.886-08:002011-02-17T14:02:34.886-08:00thanks for the link barbara!thanks for the link barbara!Art Sexy: Exposing Art, Myths and Monsters of the Seahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01884154300945254708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8415832267636845668.post-70261899246073028762011-02-03T17:49:44.263-08:002011-02-03T17:49:44.263-08:00These look pretty intense. I decided that in response I would open my own library in a corner of the existing school library. I worked with another grad student Doug Helikson to build a little room out of steel and plexiglass, and then I brought in my own collection of books and checked them out to anyone who stopped by for a visit. Eventually people started donating books to me and I got interns to sit in the library when I wasn't there. After a year the librarian became threatened by the success of my project and kicked me out."Donovanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12195275870408960297noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8415832267636845668.post-62011589927929558622011-01-24T15:10:12.210-08:002011-01-24T15:10:12.210-08:00This piece reminds me of this work by some guy. This piece reminds me of this work by some guy.Chris Cassidyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16125249058748408744noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8415832267636845668.post-85647943767187243012011-01-24T05:40:08.408-08:002011-01-24T05:40:08.408-08:00These are both interesting, though Enright's t...These are both interesting, though Enright's theatrical gaming strikes me mostly as professionalized LARPing, and its position in an art context as much about attracting clientele who can afford it as anything else.Chris Cassidyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16125249058748408744noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8415832267636845668.post-82040159982110926292011-01-23T18:50:58.462-08:002011-01-23T18:50:58.462-08:00My favorite part of the manifesto is the Balinese ...My favorite part of the manifesto is the Balinese saying she quotes: "We have no Art, we try to do everything well."
